Sound the Alarm
A Call for God’s People to Live and Stand for Biblical Righteousness

When America first became a nation, we were led by men of God who relied on the Bible as the foundation for the government they created. Today we are living under a government operated largely without God and without reference to His Word.

Any remaining notion in America that the Word of God should dictate how we live is coming under swift and steady public ridicule and attack. God is no longer the center of our lives, our calendar or our national priorities … and the same could be said of the Church. The Church has lost its salt and its light, in favor of popularity and growth at all costs.

America is in the throws of a cultural war in which Satan is doing two things:
• Destroying the people of our nation with every moral filth known to humanity.
• Deceiving the Church until it has fallen asleep and lacks the strength to rouse itself for the fight.

It is our responsibility to take a stand when it comes to matters about which the Bible takes a stand. But we cannot take that stand until we return to being the people God has called us to be: the people of God’s presence, a people who call on His name.

We know that God is holy. We know that He has called us to a lifestyle of obedience, and we know that He calls the Church to influence and change the culture. Yet our generation has seen evil encroaching further and further into the territory of our culture and society. The Church has largely stood on the sidelines, allowing the culture to influence the Church, rather than herself exerting a godly influence on the culture. The Church has stood back and watched abortion become legal, prayer taken out of schools, no-fault divorce become available, and rampant profanity pollute TV, movies and airwaves – not to mention the ongoing removal of all vestiges of Christian references and symbols in our nation.

Now, here we are, looking down the barrel at the same-sex marriage issue. It has already become legal in the state of Massachusetts. If we don’t stand at this time, this will be one more piece of ground that the enemy takes while the Church does little or nothing. Only this time, this issue threatens the very pulpits of our land, by potentially calling any adverse reference to homosexuality a crime. The Church is beginning to feel the threat of the doom that surely lies ahead.

We must not set our guns a-blazing at the evil around us until we recognize the apostasy that lies within us. Our own hearts must be broken. We have no authority to address the evil of our day unless we repent and call upon the Lord for the Church. Let those who minister before the Lord weep. Let them cry out to the Lord for His Church. The Church is the problem; the Church holds the answer. Doing nothing is not an option.

God has strategically placed each of us where we are “for such a time as this.” Just as Queen Esther interceded before the king on behalf of her people, so also we need to intercede before the King of Kings on behalf of ourselves, our Church and our nation.

It seems that God, in His mercy, is using the battle against same-sex marriage to call the Church to the role she was designed for: to be a mighty beacon of light. May we stand up and take back the ground the enemy has taken, as we hasten the coming of the Lord.

When the Lord looks at this nation, may He not be appalled that there is no one to intervene. Rather, may He find His church ready to stand for righteousness in the land—and may we look and be amazed at what He accomplishes through a people willing to obey His call.

Sound the Alarm Washington is a coalition of pastors in our state that exists to inform churches about the issue of same-sex marriage.

Election News You're Not Likely to Hear Anywhere Else

The Politics of a Public School

Abraham Lincoln once expressed how the ideas of classrooms in one generation would form the ideas of government within the next. If Lincoln was correct, then perhaps the future of American politics will be an atmosphere of greater intolerance. This certainly is the case for New Jersey's Crossroad South Middle School, where a picture displayed in English teacher Shiba Pillai-Diaz's classroom sparked e-mails from concerned parents to the school principal, escalating to her removal from school premises the following day. When confronted by the school principal, Pillai-Diaz recalls the principal stating, "You've caused more disruption, hatred and anger than anyone I've ever known." What public display could have invited such sharp comments from school authorities? A picture of President Bush.

The picture was displayed among other national symbols such as the American flag, the Declaration of Independence and a picture of the U.S. Capitol. The school's attempt to remove the President's picture due to the dissatisfaction of a few is another example of a partisan culture within segments of public education. You'll be encouraged to know that she remains strong in her stand to deny school officials' blatant bias an entrance into the classroom of her students.

A Disturbing Pattern

Over the past few weeks, we have been observing a growing level of intolerance from the radical Left. As you may know, liberal groups are now sending "monitors" to spy on church services, looking for the slightest hint of questionable election-related activity. In addition to these "subtle" efforts, there have been several acts of violence in recent days directed against Bush/Cheney offices in several States.

In early September, someone fired a shot through the window of the Huntington, West Virginia, Republican Party headquarters while two dozen people were inside watching coverage of the Republican National Convention. On September 30th, the Washington State headquarters of the president's reelection campaign was burglarized and three computers were stolen. Yesterday morning, someone fired several shots into a Bush/Cheney office in Tennessee. And on the same day, union protestors stormed the Bush/Cheney headquarters in Orlando, Florida. These tactics must be condemned and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

No Draft!

Democrats are behind a deceptive email that is making the rounds, scaring college students into thinking that President Bush is going to reinstate the draft. The email even notes that there is pending legislation in Congress to do just that. While true, what the message fails to provide is any context whatsoever. The legislation has been introduced by liberal Democrats! It is not supported by the administration or the Pentagon and it is going nowhere in Congress. Last week the House Republican leadership called their bluff and brought the draft bill to the House floor for a vote. It failed 2-to-402. Even the bill's sponsor, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) voted against it!

Registering to Vote: Early, Often and Everywhere

Voter registration deadlines have passed in most states. In Ohio, Americans Coming Together, a George Soros-funded group, and other liberal entities have turned in 300,000 new registrations. But some county election officials believe a large number of those aren't real and thus increase the potential for fraud. Four counties in Ohio now have more registered voters than the number of voting-age people the U.S. Census Bureau estimated to have lived in the counties in 2003. Several other counties may find themselves in the same situation as they finish processing stacks of applications.

In Franklin County, which includes the state capitol of Columbus, the registration rolls have hit 817,000 voters, with the Census estimating there are only 815,000 adults over the in the county. The rolls have not been purged in years and already include 250,000 inactive voters, meaning voters who have not cast a ballot in the past four federal election cycles. Having that much deadwood on the rolls is an open invitation for fraud, since county officials do not check for photo identification if someone shows up to vote.

If any states are close on Election Night, you can bet there will be litigation teams in court by the next morning. Just the procedures in handling registration forms look to be a lawsuit-rich environment.

Why Washington voters should reject I-892!
“…video gambling machines are 'the crack cocaine' of gambling because they are so addictive."
- Robert Hunter, clinical psychologist at the Problem Gambling Center in Las Vegas

Initiative 892
Initiative Measure No. 892 concerns authorizing additional electronic scratch ticket machines [slot machines] to reduce property taxes. This measure would authorize licensed non-tribal gambling establishments to operate the same type and number of machines as tribal governments, with a portion of tax revenue generated used to reduce state property taxes.

Should this measure be enacted into law? NO!

  • Initiative 892, promoted by Tim Eyman, would unleash a massive expansion of gambling in Washington State by allowing non-tribal businesses to have electronic slot machines. Currently slot machines are allowed only in tribal casinos. I-892 would bring an additional 19,000 Las Vegas-style slot machines to restaurants, convenience stores, bowling alleys and other establishments. This would double the number of slot machines in our state, making us second only to Nevada.
  • The gambling industry has been relentless in their attempt to expand in our state. Their goal is wide-open, virtually unlimited gambling and they are using anti-tax activist Tim Eyman to achieve their goal. The gambling industry is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a human predator that consumes societal stability, financial prosperity and quality of life. We must resist gambling expansionists in our state.
  • Gambling is a destructive force in any community and will poison our exquisite quality of life. A drive through any state that has such gambling (Montana, for example) will confirm the ugly nature of full-blown gambling. Flashing neon casino signs on most street corners are a hideous blight that obscures the natural beauty of such places. We must not destroy the pristine beauty of Washington State.
  • Very rarely, if ever, does gambling result in a positive social outcome. The costs are great, and the returns are poor. Gambling victimizes the most vulnerable members of society. We can contribute to the wellbeing of our fellow citizens with our vote against expanded gambling. Washington voters must oppose I-892 because it is the right thing to do.
  • Don’t be misled by the pie-in-the-sky promise of an easy property tax cut. Our promised “tax break” is miniscule compared to the suffering that is produced when a family is affected by gambling addiction. Gambling is always an unwise investment which almost guarantees a negative return. In addition, gambling is an unreliable source of income and revenues usually don’t come in as predicted. We must not gamble away our future.

Conclusion

A cut in property taxes would be a welcome relief for Washington State taxpayers but electronic slot machines are the wrong solution for this serious problem. Voters must be willing to look beyond the commendable goal of a lower tax burden and realize that gambling always creates a greater burden on society. The expansion of gambling will have a negative trickle down effect on families and whatever weakens families will weaken our society. This is a price we are not willing to pay – even for lower taxes.

Voters in Washington State have twice voted decisively to reject gambling initiatives. It’s time to make our voice heard once again by voting NO on I-892. We need to do the right thing simply because it’s the right thing to do. We also call on the state legislature to do the right thing and protect the citizenry from gambling exploitation and provide innovative, positive solutions where everyone wins.

Does My Vote Really Matter?

Yes! Consider the following examples:

1801 - one vote in the U.S. House broke the tie between presidential candidates Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Burr was later charged with treason!

1839 - one vote made Marcus Morton governor of Massachusetts and earned him the nickname “Landslide.”

1868 - one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from being removed from office.

1876 - one vote in the Electoral College gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency.

1941 - one vote extended the active service provision in the Selective Service Act (Draft) just four months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

2000 - we had one of the most closely contested presidential elections in American history, and some people are still arguing about who won!

The point is: Your vote can make a tremendous difference!
